Getting Started with openSUSE 11.0

To get started with openSUSE, you can download one of the ISO images for the final release. We make several images available, including x86, x86_64, and PowerPC images. We offer installable DVDs with a wide selection of software, as well as GNOME and KDE4 live CDs with a smaller selection of software chosen to get desktop users up and running quickly.

New and Notable Features

A lot has changed since openSUSE 10.3, and a lot of work has gone into improving openSUSE. In this release you’ll find updated versions of almost every program, a vastly improved installer, faster and easier package management, and much more. Here’s some of the improvements you’ll see in openSUSE 11.0:

Installation and Package Management

openSUSE has enjoyed an easy to use installer for quite some time, but the openSUSE team felt that the number of steps required to install openSUSE could use some work. In this release, the number of steps required to install openSUSE have been reduced dramatically.

Users have two options for installation — the live CDs, which feature a simplified installer that doesn’t require the user to make any decisions about package selection, and the openSUSE DVDs, which allow users to choose their desktop (including KDE 3.5 and Xfce, or no desktop at all) and other packages not included on the live CDs.

Package Management Improvements

Installing packages on openSUSE has never been easier, or faster. The openSUSE Team worked hard on making Zypp (the software management engine) much faster between 10.3 and 11.0.

PackageKit

Part of providing a quality operating system is providing updates throughout the life of the system. We want to make it easy for users to apply critical fixes to their system, and have provided PackageKit to make updating an openSUSE system a breeze.

PackageKit is a utility that makes updating software much easier. GNOME and KDE users will see an icon in the system tray that provides visual cues about system updates. When updates for openSUSE are available, the icon will change to reflect the presence of updates — and whether the updates are just bug fixes or if there are critical updates or security fixes that need to be installed right away.

KDE and KDE4

openSUSE 11.0 includes two branches of KDE — the KDE 3.5.x series, which is the stable and older KDE series that many openSUSE users are already familiar with, and the cutting edge KDE4.

KDE4 is not quite a drop-in replacement for KDE 3.5, and some features still have rough edges. Because the openSUSE team wants to ensure the best possible support for its users, we’ve given users the option of installing KDE4 or KDE 3.5 (or both) for 11.0. (At this time, there is no live CD for KDE 3.5, but users can still install it from the DVD.)

However, the openSUSE team has done its best to ensure that the KDE 4 experience is top-notch in openSUSE 11.0. The 11.0 release includes KDE 4.0.4 with some features included from the KDE 4.1 release that will be available in July.

Getting to Know KDE 4

KDE 4 is the KDE Project’s vision for a next-generation desktop. It includes many rewrites of the KDE platform, with new technologies that will lay the foundation of a flexible and multi-platform development framework.

Improved Look and Feel

The first thing KDE users will notice in KDE 4 is Oxygen, a new approach to artwork on KDE that brings a unified and attractive look to all KDE 4 interfaces, applications, icons, and themes.

After taking in the artwork, users will be able to take advantage of Plasma, the new desktop shell. Plasma provides the full desktop interface experience, from the KDE panel and menu, to desktop widgets (called Plasmoids) that offer a completely new level of functionality for KDE.

The KDE window manager, KWin, has gotten a major upgrade for KDE 4, and now includes native composting features, so

Applications

KDE’s applications have also been overhauled and improved for 4.0.

GNOME 2.22

GNOME users will find a lot to like in openSUSE 11.0. openSUSE’s GNOME is very close to upstream GNOME, because Novell and openSUSE want to do as much work as possible in the upstream release. However, we do modify GNOME’s artwork to provide a unified look and feel for the distro. The default GNOME configuration, such as panel layout, is slightly different than “stock” GNOME, and the openSUSE GNOME team backports a number of bug fixes into our GNOME release to ensure stability and the best possible GNOME experience.

• Say Cheese – a fun Webcam app for taking pictures and making videos with your computer’s Web cam. You can modify pictures with stock effects in Say Cheese, or use F-Spot or The GIMP to edit.
• GVFS – The GNOME Virtual File System provides better support for networked file systems.
• Tomboy improvements – Tomboy now includes support for Notebooks.
• Evince updates – Evince now supports page transitions in PDF slideshows and has been improved to use less memory.
• Our Clock Applet improvements have been integrated into upstream GNOME.
• GNOME uses PulseAudio for better sound management.

Evolution Improvements

The Evolution e-mail client has been updated with a bunch of new features (and bugfixes) since 10.3. The latest Evolution includes:

• Google Calendar support
• Using Bogofilter as the default spam filter
• Supports white lists
• Don’t download spam: Evolution now checks spam headers before downloading email!
• Better MIME support
• More than 450 bug fixes, 50 that address major issues in the previous release of Evolution

PulseAudio

In openSUSE 11.0, PulseAudio replaces esound, for much better audio support under GNOME.

Firefox 3.0

Firefox is one of the most popular open source applications on the planet, and the openSUSE desktop just wouldn’t be complete without Mozilla Firefox.

Note openSUSE 11.0 ships with Firefox 3.0 beta 5, and updates to the final 3.0 release upon applying the current updates. The openSUSE team decided, because Firefox 3.0 would ship so closely to the final openSUSE 11.0 release date, it was better to package and test the 3.0 series than the older Firefox releases.

The 3.0 release has a number of new features and improvements that will make browsing the Web on openSUSE convenient and safe:

Security Features

• Firefox includes better site identification features. In the location bar, click on the site’s icon and you’ll see information on the site’s ownership and if you’re using a secure connection, Firefox can verify the site’s identity.
• Firefox identifies attack sites that are known to distribute viruses, trojans, or other malware.
• Phishing sites are stopped cold by Firefox. If Firefox detects that a site is impersonating a legitimate site (like eBay), it will display a warning to ensure users aren’t fooled by phishing sites.

Better Browsing Experience

• Firefox has simplified add-on installation, to make it easier to install popular extensions.
• If an extension is known to have a security vulnerability, Firefox will disable the extension until an update has been made available and installed.
• Save tabs on exit: If you don’t want to lose your browsing setup, Firefox will let you save your tab groups for next time.
• Improved download manager makes it easier to find your files and search downloaded files by site.
• Zoom text or the entire site! Firefox 3.0 lets you zoom everything on a page — including graphics — or just the text, as in previous versions.

OpenOffice.org 2.4

OpenOffice.org 2.4 provides openSUSE users with a top-notch office suite with a word processor (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentation tool (Impress), and drawing software (Draw). Whether you need to write a report for school, create a budget spreadsheet, or whip up a presentation to convince the boss to boost the marketing budget, OpenOffice.org will do the job.

The OpenOffice.org 2.4 release brings a number of new features to the suite, such as improved chart features, rectangular text selection in Writer, drag and drop rows and columns in Calc, and much more.

openSUSE ships the [Go-OO http://go-oo.org/] version of OpenOffice.org, which means users get a lot of additional features not found in the upstream version of OpenOffice.org.

• Gstreamer Integration: Want to add more zip to your presentations? OpenOffice.org includes Gstreamer support, so you can embed music and videos into your presentations and other documents.
• Expanded document format support: OpenOffice.org already supports dozens of formats — including Microsoft Office formats, Open Document Format, and many others — you can import documents from MS-Works, WordPerfect Grafics (WPG), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), and OpenXML DocX (Word), XlsX (Excel), and PptX (PowerPoint) formats. Note that OpenOffice.org on openSUSE support import only for OpenXML.
• Faster access to your office suite: Go-OO starts faster, thanks to performance improvements over stock OpenOffice.org. In addition, with the Systray Quick-starter, (Found under Tools -> Options -> Memory) OpenOffice.org runs in the background, ready to open, edit, and create new documents.
• 3-D effects: You’ll find Linux-only 3-D transitions in Impress for your presentations.
• Script OpenOffice.org with Mono: Go-OO adds support for Mono, allowing users to build integrated applications in Mono-supported languages like C#, IronPython, Boo, and more!
• Better Excel interoperability, and support for VBA macros.

Banshee 1.0

For managing music and video, it doesn’t get much better than Banshee. openSUSE 11.0 ships with Banshee 1.0, a major rewrite of the popular multimedia management and playback application.

The 1.0 release includes a number of improvements and new features, including:

• Video management: Now you can watch and manage videos with Banshee, the same way you manage music!
• Better Last.fm support.
• Improved search: Search by keyword, genres, ratings, and many other fields.
• Shuffle with style: Banshee’s Shuffle feature has been beefed up, so you don’t hear the same songs you’ve just listened to. Random doesn’t need to be repetitive!
• Support for a wide range of devices. Banshee lets you manage iPods, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and Mass Storage devices.
• Better podcast support: Banshee lets you subscribe to podcasts (audio and video!) and even stream the ‘cast before it’s downloaded.
• CD burning: Banshee will rip that playlist right to a CD for you, using its integration with Brasero.

Compiz Fusion

The Linux desktop isn’t just functional, with openSUSE 11.0 it’s beautiful, thanks in part to Compiz Fusion.

It’s now easy to enable and configure Compiz in KDE and GNOME, using Simple CCSM, which is labeled Desktop Effects in the main menu. Using the Simple CCSM dialog you can enable/disable Compiz, and change some of the more prominent Compiz features without getting deep into all of the functionality of Compiz. From here you can choose effects profiles which vary from lightweight profiles with a few effects to more comprehensive sets of effects which may have a more marked effect on performance.

More advanced users may want to delve deep into Compiz functionality with the CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm), which is also part of openSUSE 11.0’s default package set.

Miscellaneous Updates, Improvements, and New Applications

openSUSE has a number of updates and improvements that don’t fall neatly under any specific category.

Tasque

Novell regularly sponsors what it calls a Hack Week, to allow developers to work on projects that they find interesting but not necessarily related to their regular work.

One of the interesting projects that came out of Hack Week II, is Tasque, a simple task management application for the Linux desktop.

Tasque works with Remember the Milk, a Web service that handles to-do lists online. After you sync Tasque with RTM, you can update and manage your to-do list using the Tasque interface.

When you’re not managing your to-do’s, Tasque sits in the system tray, out of the way until you need to add a new task or check your list. It’s simple, convenient, and powerful.

Safari resizes each tab depending on the number you have open. Set a bookmark for a group of tabs or revert to the tabs that were open when you last closed or quit Safari.

SnapBack.

With most browsers, it’s easy to lose your way on the web. You go surfing, and before you know it, you’ve drifted far from where you started. Stop hitting the Back button and start using SnapBack in Safari. SnapBack lets you instantly snap back to your original search results or to the top level of any website, even after you’ve browsed down a few levels.

The SnapBack icon appears in the search field after you click a link in a search results page. Clicking the icon takes you back to the results page and even scrolls to the specific location you last viewed.

SnapBack also works in the address field. Type an address, click a bookmark, or click a link in email or another application, and Safari creates a SnapBack anchor point. When the SnapBack icon appears in the address field, click it to return to that anchor point instantly. So, if you type in the address of your favorite news site, click a link to read an article, then click another link, the SnapBack icon will take you back to the front page of the original news site.

Forms AutoFill.

Now you need never fill out an online form from scratch. That’s because Safari Forms AutoFill completes online forms with information from your Address Book or from previously completed forms.

Let Safari fill in your name, street address, city, zip code, email, and other information. Safari also gives you the option to automatically enter account names and passwords — all stored in a secure, encrypted format.

Built-in RSS.

Scan all the latest news, information, and articles from thousands of websites in one simple-to-read, searchable article list delivered right to you. The built-in RSS (Really Simple Syndication) reader in Safari tells you when new articles or blog posts have been added to your favorite sites, so you never have to guess.

Whenever you land on a page that offers an RSS feed, Safari displays an RSS icon in the address field. Click it and you view the simple RSS feed. Bookmark it and Safari tells you how many updates have been added since your last visit. The RSS view in Safari is customizable, so you can adjust article length or sort and filter articles by date, title, and source. You can also use the built-in search field to find articles relating to topics of interest. All from one place: Safari.

Resizable text areas.

Maybe the text area you’re typing in is a bit too small to read. Or maybe you just have a lot to say.

Either way, Safari lets you resize text areas on any website, just by grabbing the corner of the area. Resize and the web page reflows to make room.

Private browsing.

Your browsing is your business. Which is exactly why Safari offers private browsing — to keep your online activities private. Turn on private browsing and Safari won’t store your Google searches, your cookies, the history of sites you’ve visited, your download history, or information from online forms you’ve filled out.

If you’ve been browsing without private browsing turned on, just use Privacy Reset to empty your cache and clear Safari of your browsing, forms, and search history. It’s a one-click clean slate.

Security.

For starters, Safari uses robust encryption to ensure that your private information stays that way. When you browse a secure site, Safari displays a lock icon in the upper-right corner of the browser. If you want to know more about the credentials of a secure site, click the lock icon and Safari displays detailed information about the site’s security certificate.

Safari supports SSL versions 2 and 3, as well as Transport Layer Security (TLS), the next generation of Internet security. Safari uses these technologies to provide a secure, encrypted channel that protects all your information from online eavesdroppers. And Safari lets you use standards-based authentication such as Kerberos single sign-on and X.509 personal certificates, or proprietary protocols like NTLMv2 to log in to secure sites.

Safari also supports a variety of proxy protocols — services that help firewalls control what flows in and out of the network — including Automatic Proxy configuration, FTP Proxy, Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), Streaming Proxy (RTSP), SOCKS Proxy, and Gopher Proxy.

Graphics and fonts.

Apple brings the same amazing graphics technology to Safari that’s used in Mac OS X to ensure great color in everything from iPhoto to Final Cut Pro. Safari is the only browser that employs advanced color management to deliver web images with the most accurate color possible.

And Safari makes text beautiful and easy to read on all displays thanks to Apple’s sophisticated font-rendering technology. Safari smoothes fonts so that they’re easy on the eyes but also remain as faithful as possible
